Get that sewing machine out of the cupboard and let Katy Taylor show you how you can start using it to develop your own projects.  Filled with lots of practical information, and Katy will help you to sew your first piece to take home.

Are you thinking of taking up sewing as a hobby or have you got a sewing machine gathering dust? This is course for you. Starting at the very beginning with a guided tour of a sewing machine, how to set it up and use all the basic stiches.

The course will help orientate you on a machine, decipher the jargon, choose the correct fabric and learn to sew a project. By the end of the day you will have stitched your own bunting, pattern weights or tote bag and have taken the first steps on your sewing journey.

No experience is necessary.

About the Day

A Beginner’s Guide to Using a Sewing Machine will run from 10am-4pm and includes refreshments throughout the day including fresh coffee, teas and a tasty light lunch.

10.40 – Setting up your machine for the first time

11.15 – Selecting fabric, an overview of the best fabric for different projects
11.45 – Selecting your project
12.00 – Using a straight stitch
12.15 – Learning other stiches
12.30 – LUNCH
13.00 – A quick guide to cutting out accurately
13.15 – Cutting out your project
13.30 – Stitching your project
14.00 – BREAK
14.20 – Continuing your project
15.30 – Next steps, guide to simple projects
15.50 – Share your project with the group
16.00 – Course ends

Essential Information

Thread, fabrics and a project pack will be supplied on the day with a charge of £8 paid directly to the tutor.  Sewing machines will be supplied.

The workshop takes place in the First Floor Gallery space.  There is a flight of stairs and no lift access.  If you have any access issues, please get in touch to discuss alternative arrangements.

Katy has been sewing and working with textiles since she was very young. She grew up in a family of makers, menders, knitters and dressmakers. She has developed textile businesses and delivered courses for many years. Her courses are always accessible and fun, concentrating on enjoying on the creative journey. Katy continues to enjoy sewing and knitting as hobbies, and has a particular passion for reusing vintage textiles and sock knitting.
