Description

This is part of a Community Project to develop links between Shambellie House, its grounds and the local community thanks to a successful package of funding.  Our grant funding covers the cost of running a five day introductory stone carving course at Shambellie House for local people and young people working in partnership with us, followed by a 10 day project in March.

Part One is five day training and introductory course. Part Two would take place in March and is a ten day community project to build a Community Knot Garden in the grounds of Shambellie House.

There are 12 places available. It is suitable for beginners and those with no experience of carving stone to Intermediate or advanced levels

During this  5 day introductory course you will learn how to relief carve into stone.  Concepts to be explored will be along the organic forms in nature, leaves , Fauna , abstract geometric designs  and Natural Photography using  the grounds of Shambellie house  as your inspiration. We will also be looking at the historical heritage of the house connected to heraldry and architectural decoration – e.g. Gargoyles and you can bring along visuals you would like to work from your own designs.

What you can expect:

After welcome and introductions we will start with a half day sketching workshop of the house and grounds to give you the chance to come up with  ideas for development of relief carvings, combined with group discussions to investigate concepts.

Participants will then be able to explore and experience the techniques of stone carving and learn to understand 3 dimensional design, fully developing your artwork and stone carving skills throughout the intensive 5 days. You will also learn how to use and handle stone carving tools.

All your food and refreshments will be provided while you are at Shambellie House.

Tuition and guidance will be given on an individual basis by our expert tutors with the enjoyment of working within a group in a relaxed informal atmosphere.

Kit and Requirements

Stone carving tools and equipment will be provided for participants.

You should wear old clothes and comfortable shoes. Please come dressed for the Scottish Weather – most of the work will be outdoors under shelter.

Lucinda Wilkinson

I am a professional Sculptor with over twenty years experience of working as a community artist predominantly in the field of Sculpture. My practice has been dedicated to the pursuit of Sculpture and the accessibility of Sculpture in the community.
I have shown a commitment to making and developing work in many geographical contexts – Newcastle Upon Tyne , Glasgow, London and Northern Spain. I am particularly engaged and focused on producing work centred on climate change in the polar regions. Recently I represented Scotland during International Polar Year creating an ambitious installation ; collection of glass sculptural engravings showing how Antarctica’s ice shelves , glaciers and sea ice had been altered due to global warming. Transcripted from satelitte data provided by the European Space Agency the artwork is an accurate visual recording of ice loss.
As a Artist in Residence I have initiated and managed many of my projects collaborating closely with the community to arrive at ideas for developing and producing public artworks. This can be particularly seen in the Surf City Public Sculpture Project in Ruchill , Glasgow [part of Glasgow 1999 UK City Of Architecture and design]. Young and older participants with no prior experience were taught the skills of constructing and carving in stone and in laying the foundations, building process of a large scale public sculpture.
In Glasgow’s Botanic Gardens I lead and ran a series of Family Sculpture Days engaging with the general public along side a project collaborating with visually impaired people , helping them to learn the skills of wood carving through a series of workshops. The carved sculptures were inspired from the range of plants and flowers grown in the glass houses .
Latterly I have led and delivered projects producing stone public artworks which enhanced community green spaces. I worked collaboratively with a core group of participants teaching them the skills of stone carving in both relief form and full sculpture . Resulting artworks were permanently placed in the grounds of Govan hill baths, and Lambill Stables Community Garden.

With the 3 year Trails And Tails Project at Kirkintilloch I delivered a series of taster stone carving workshops involving the community to create a core group to work with closely during this period. We explored the cultural heritage of the area , focusing on the lost heritage as concepts for the production of the stone public artworks which were permanently sited in the town centre and surrounding environment. I worked very closely with the participants teaching them the skills of stone carving, also producing my own work for the project alongside them .
Alongside my experience of working as a community artist I have 17 years experience of teaching in further education as a lecturer / tutor at West college Scotland for 15 years and recently at Glasgow School Of Art and Strathclyde University – continuing education department. My expertise has been in the fine art disciplines ranging from painting and drawing , printing , life drawing , location drawing , sculpture, and Mosaic Design. I also have a TQFE qualification .

Next Steps

This course will lead on to future Stone Carving courses at Shambellie in 2025 and the chance to be involved in a community stone carving project.

Part Two would take place in March and is a ten day community project to build a Community Knot Garden in the grounds of Shambellie House.

Dates 7th – 16th March

What you can expect:

This 10 day project will involve you being part of a group, working together to design and build  a Community Knott Garden in the grounds of Shambellie House.

This could either be carved in stone with intricate patterns and hedges or incorporate areas of dry stone walling. A variety of herbs, vegetables and flowers would make up the enclosed intersections of the overall design.

We hope this supports community cohesion, getting people to work together to co produce artwork and a garden design that can be enjoyed by the community of New Abbey for many years to come. As well as team working, the project incorporates many skills such as horticulture, stone carving, garden design and dyking.

Collaboration with the local history and stone masons working on Sweetheart Abbey would also take place as we have the support of Historic Environment Scotland.

If you have answered yes and would like to discuss your requirements then please get in touch.

Please tell us why you are interested in being part of this community project. If we are oversubscribed we will undertake selection process to ensure we have a group of people who will work well together for the good of our community.

Priority will be given to people who live in the local area and who would benefit from being part of a community project.

You must be over 16 to apply and be willing to work outdoors as part of a group. If you have any concerns about suitability please call us to arrange a chat on 01387 440082.

This five day starter course in October is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to be part of the 10 day project planned for March. Please let us know if you are available and interested in being part of this longer term project. Dates will be finalised with participants and it is proposed that this will run from the 7th to the 16th March 2025 and be fully funded.

You are not committed to attending in March and new people will be welcomed if spaces are available however preference will be given to people who are interested in both the October and March elements of the community project.
