Shambellie House is delighted to offer a series of Southwest Scotland photo residentials with award winning landscape photographer Allan Wright. The course is split over two days, visiting hand-picked locations in beautiful, unspoiled and relatively unknown Dumfries and Galloway with time for tuition on editing and printing in our well-appointed digital suite at the historic Shambellie House. Accommodation and meals are taken care of by Mabie Country House Hotel,* a short distance from Shambellie House.

Details

The weekend will start with check in at Mabie House for 9.30am on day one. The group will then be transported by minibus to Shambellie House which is just 5 minutes away. Following a welcome refreshment, introductions and outline for the weekend, you will depart for day one from Shambellie House, being transported by minibus with your tutor Allan. Throughout the day you will be visiting different locations, learning new skills and sharing ideas. Lunch will be informal and eaten amongst the beautiful scenery that Dumfries and Galloway has to offer.

You will return to Shambellie late afternoon for refreshments and to make use of the Digital Suite with input from your tutor before being transported back to Mabie House Hotel for dinner, chosen from the menu which includes a wide range of local produce , served at approximately 7.30 – 8 pm.

Day two will start with a sunrise photoshoot, returning to the hotel for breakfast around 9.30am. There will be a break for breakfast and a short relax if you need one before checking out of the hotel and stopping off at Shambellie to set up for the day ahead.  We will then set off again, visiting more handpicked locations in the local area and eating lunch in another beautiful spot as you relax and enjoy the scenery and company.

You will return to Shambellie House mid-afternoon, finishing the weekend with a session at Shambellie House to edit and then print your favourite image from your shots.

In the field:

  • Appreciating and harnessing the power of natural / ambient light.
  • The importance of composition and its role in revealing the inherent subject.
  • Simplifying how to be at ease with the camera and the technical options offered.
  • Guidance on reading, navigating and understanding landform and nature to shorten the odds of an improved strike rate.

In the Digital Suite:

Tuition in the digital suite will involve editing sessions at approximately (weather dependent) 50% of course content.  Emphasis will be on the importance of distilling the best from a shoot for subsequent correction and enhancement for maximum image quality / enjoyment.

 

 

 

About the Course

Creative digital landscape photography with Allan Wright is a two day workshop with residential accommodation included at Mabie House Hotel.

Costs included:

2 days of expert tuition from Allan Wright Landscape Photographer
Exclusive use of the Digital Suite
One A2 print on high profile paper
Accommodation and meals (refreshments, lunch and dinner Saturday; breakfast lunch and refreshments Sunday)
All travel to locations and between your accommodation and Shambellie House

Accommodation is priced per person for single occupancy however rooms can be double/twin if required and additional guests accommodated for an extra £85 per person. There is a wide range of activities available in the local area including other workshops at Shambellie House that weekend or walking, mountain biking and should a partner or friend like to join you for the weekend.

Should accommodation not be required, or you wish to organise your own, the cost of the workshop will be £400 per person.

Essential Information

A level of physical fitness and mobility is required as there will be some walking on small footpaths to reach photoshoots.  The Digital Suite is on the second floor accessed only by a flight of stairs. 

What you need for the course.

Software/applications used will be the Adobe photographer Photoshop/Bridge/Lightroom package. It is recommended that participants sign up for a minimum of one month to enable use of this leading editing software package. Cost is £9.95 per month/cancel any time.

SLR, compact or bridge camera preferably with zoom or interchangeable lens option.
Camera’s ability to shoot RAW files is highly recommended.
SD card and plenty of battery power.
Outdoor gear, boots, waterproofs etc.
Moderate level of fitness, i.e ability to tackle stiles, gentle slopes, shorelines etc.
Selection of 6 images from participants existing library for review and discussion in digital suite session.
