Description
Morag has been working with sustainable textiles for seven years and has created a fun, full day workshop to learn the basics of natural dyeing.
Using a combination of bought natural dye extract such as logwood (purple), weld (yellow), madder (red/coral), and cochineal (pink) , there will also be an opportunity to forage sustainably in the Shambellie grounds to make our own dye baths using plants such as willow leaf (yellow), heather (peach/coral), birch (beige) and broom (mint pale green). We will also have modifiers to shift colours to darker or lighter shades such as iron water, copper and vinegar.
We will start by swatch sampling a variety of prepared fabrics such as silk noil, linen, cotton and potentially fine wool and hemp.
We can move onto bigger sample pieces where you can experiment with shibori resist dyeing techniques to create surface pattern. (Shibori originated from China in 5th century and was adapted by Japanese in 8th century. The word means ‘to wring, squeeze or press’).
After a lovely lunch provide by Shambellie House we will prepare dye ready-cut panels to make into a ‘hippari’ Japanese silk noil jacket in the natural colour of your choice, selected from your previous swatch sample catalogue.
