Introduction to Studio Lighting

Join photographer Alan McNeish for an afternoon learning about studio lighting and trying different settings for capturing effective portrait shots.

Join Alan McNeish for an afternoon learning about studio lighting and how to set up for maximum effect. Alan will start with a short talk on the lights and lighting modifiers, followed by demonstrations on how to position the lights for a desired effect plus explanations about using meter readings for the correct exposure.

You will then have the opportunity to set the lights up, with guidance and input from Alan on taking readings and adjusting set ups before taking some portraits, using fellow attendees as your models.


This course is aimed at beginners or people with a bit of knowledge about lighting.

About the Day

The Studio Lighting Workshop running as part of our Photography Festival. It will start at 1pm and finish around 4pm with refreshments included in the price.

Please arrive early and give yourself time to view the exhibition of photographs.

The workshop will take place in the Turret Room which is up a flight of stairs with no lift access.

Kit and Requirements

If possible please bring a DSLR and lens.

However if you don’t have a DSLR we have some available to use on the day.
