Make an artist’s book inspired by nature using a concertina construction.

Tutor Joanna Shennan will show you how to fold paper and make a concertina book construction, content and cover.  Using a geli plate you will discover how to transfer colour and texture from nature to print your designs onto fabric and paper and finish with some simple embroidery stitches.  There are no wrong answers, just lots of potential for experimentation.

This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience.

About the Day

Mixed Media Artist Book will run from 10am until 4pm and includes refreshments throughout the day including fresh coffee, teas and light lunch.


10am-12noon Gathering natural material from Shambellie and printing onto fabric and paper.

12.30-1pm Lunch

1-4pm Making compositions, working on surface decorations and book construction.

4.00 Finish

Essential Information

All materials will be provided.  Please bring your own cutting board, steel rule and scalpel if you have them.  The workshop may get a little messy so please wear old clothes or a protective apron and sturdy shoes for working in the grounds.

The workshop takes place in the First Floor Gallery space.  There is a flight of stairs and no lift access.  If you have any access issues, please get in touch to discuss alternative arrangements.  You will be collecting natural material from around the gardens during the workshop and the ground may be uneven.

Joanna Shennan

Joanna is a mixed media artist inspired by all aspects of natural form.  She focuses on printing with natural materials, stencilling and stitching on both textiles and paper, resulting in 2D abstract compositions and artists books. 

Dumfries and Galloway as a region offers a wealth of inspiration and Joanna is proud to be from this part of Scotland.
