With Halloween approaching, this seems an appropriate time to explore the art of writing ghost stories.

This creative writing course is aimed at those who enjoy reading, and would like to write, ghost stories.  Using examples from M. R. James; ‘Number 13’ and ‘The Mezzotint’, the course will include lectures and writing exercises on plot, setting and point of view, as you work towards completing a ghost story of your own.

This course is suitable for beginners.

About the Day

Writing Ghost Stories will run from 10am until 4pm and includes refreshments throughout the day including fresh coffee, teas and a light lunch.


10 am Session 1 – Introduction to the genre of Ghost Stories

11.10am Break

11.20am Session 2 – Plot and ‘Number 13’ by M. R. James

12.30pm Lunch

1.30pm Session 3 – Setting and ‘The Mezzotint’ by M. R. James

2.40pm Break

2.50pm Session 4 – Point of View and a Ghost Story of your own

4pm Finish

Essential Information

Everything will be provided, please just bring a pen.

The workshop takes place in the Ground Floor Drawing Room.  There is a flight of stairs from the main entrance with a stair lift.

Darren holds a BA (Hons) English & Creative Writing (1st class), a PGCE in Lifelong Learning, and has been an adult education teacher for 10 years.  In addition to Shambellie House, he also teaches residential courses at Dillington House (Somerset), Higham Hall (Cumbria), Knuston Hall (Northamptonshire) and Marlborough College (Wiltshire), as well study days at various independent libraries throughout the UK.  You can find out more at  Darren has almost completed his first book, Encounters and Reflections: An Introduction to Philosophy, which will be published in 2022.
