Historic Tales of New Abbey

Families, locals and visitors all enjoyed a wonderful day in New Abbey courtesy of Dumfries and Galloway Council Cultural Funding and partnership working with Historic Scotland for our first ‘ Historic Tales of New Abbey’ day.
Visitors and locals were treated to brilliant storytelling at Sweetheart Abbey with Medieval Bruce Heritage Trust and Tom Hughes of Dumfries Museum,. People then had the chance to explore The Cornmill thanks to superb local guides and visit Shambellie House to hear from our own trustees John Stewart and Jo Kemp who shared the Stewart Family history and stories of Kirkconnell and the local area.
People were able to enjoy a full day, walking between the three heritage sites thanks to the new footpath linking New Abbey conservation village with Shambellie House. New Abbey is a special conservation village and thanks to local knowledge we have created a self guided conservation walk to help people enjoy the history and heritage of the local area.
It was great to see everyone enjoying the area and all it has to offer, learning about the culture and heritage and relaxing with a gentle walk through the village and woodlands. Thank you to all our volunteers, locals and visitors who made the day possible and to the sun for shining! Let’s hope it shines again the next time we run this day out.
