November ’24 Grounds and Community Project Update

We are very excited to share news that the work on the grounds and community project at Shambellie House is about to start in earnest. Thanks to an agreement with Shambellie Estate and a package of funding from the Solway Firth Partnership, Coastal Communities Fund, New Abbey Charitable Trust and DG Council’s Active Travel, we are delighted that by the end of the year there will be a safe footpath between Shambellie House Lower Car Park and the village of New Abbey.

The project has also funded some extra staff for a short time. We are working with them to try and involve more volunteers in what we do and get the grounds into shape for the use of the community,  as well as those people attending Shambellie House for workshops and events.

Part of this is the Community Stone Carving Project which started in October and from this, a community knot garden will take shape in March. Our grounds team have also been busy tidying up with the help of the Cloverglen team and SRUC Barony Conservation and Wildlife Student’s have been out to survey the landscape to ensure that we are protect the valuable asset we have here at Shambellie House.

Tomorrow see’s our first community day, lifting some of the small beech saplings which are growing where the path will be. All welcome at 2pm tomorrow and then locals can head to the village hall drop in session for tea and cake.

We are extremely grateful to our funders and look forward to seeing the results as the path and the grounds take shape.
