2 days – Discover Magic of Batik Painting with Rosi Robinson (Two Day Workshop)

Batik is my passion. I love doing batik, exhibiting it and of course teaching it. Ever since I was introduced to it over 50 years ago, I have been lucky to have exhibited my work in the UK, Europe, China, Japan, and in North America. I’ve also taught batik workshops around the UK (including at Shambellie House); in Luxembourg and Germany, in the USA and in Nova Scotia, Canada.

I have travelled a lot especially, in Japan, China, Sri Lanka and Indonesia where batik is particularly celebrated.

I have written three books on batik; have been featured in a variety of magazines including being a finalist (twice) in the International Artist magazine. 

I also was featured in BBC Bargain Hunt which was first broadcast in August 2022, but was re-broadcast in October 2024 and September 2025. The response to my batik paintings has been amazing. I was only on TV  for under 5 minutes!

I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. I live in Sussex, England but come up to Scotland often, especially to New Abbey where my brother, John Stewart, lives and where we as a family used to spend our Easter and Summer holidays.

I love teaching and spreading the word of batik. My batik paintings are very figurative. However, if you sign up for a workshop, you don’t have to be as detailed as me. You can be figurative, abstract, and experimental in your designs. 

During the workshop you will be introduced to a variety of techniques – both in applying wax with different tools and applying dyes. To begin with you will work on paper and then move onto cotton fabric.

I will work with each person individually and will take you through different stages, starting with the lightest colour, building up to the darkest one.

Batik can be very meditational and calming The first waxing can be slow, but once you have captured the highlights under wax then the process gets quicker. When the dye is applied to the fabric, the colour is instant and exciting. There is often a silence in the room when people are concentrating on creating their batiks.

By the end of the weekend, you should have some experimental pieces and come away with at least one batik picture/masterpiece.
